A man from Trinity in Bonavista North made his first court appearance this morning, blamed for a crash last year that killed two people.
The charges against 53-year-old Roger Hunt were just laid in February following the devastating, single-vehicle crash last summer.
The phone starting ringing at the RCMP detachment in Glovertown around 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 23rd, with reports of a serious mishap on Route 320 near Hare Bay.
Police were told that a demolished truck was engulfed in flame in the middle of the road. Once the smoke cleared, two passengers in the truck, a man and woman both aged 62, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Hunt, deemed to be the driver, was rushed to hospital in Gander with serious injuries.
Meanwhile, an RCMP crash expert, fire investigator and the chief medical examiner went to work, piecing together what happened.
Seven months later, in early February, two counts of dangerous driving causing death were laid against Hunt, who was then released on conditions.
He made his first appearance in Gander provincial court this morning, during which the Crown said the evidence, or disclosure, is ready for the defence.
The plan is for Hunt to review that with his lawyer before possibly entering pleas when the case is called again on May 6th.
