The territorial government of St. Pierre et Miquelon says it appears as though the French islands have “disappeared” from a list of damaging reciprocal tariffs imposed by the United States.
A government spokesperson tells VOCM News he can’t say whether they were never on the list of countries from which U.S. President Donald Trump wants to impose tariffs, or whether they were dropped, but they no longer appear to be targeted.
However, he says, it appears as though the French islands – which rely heavily on tourism and the fishery – may still be subject to an additional 10 per cent tariff on exports to the United States.
That’s a concern because it will affect St. Pierre seafood products. The French department says it is also carefully considering the impact on local prices from reciprocal tariffs imposed by Canada and the EU – the two regions from where the islands import most of their products.
