Today is Easter Sunday, the most sacred day on the Christian calendar.
Reverend Oliver Dingwell of Cowan Heights United Church in St. John’s acknowledges that these are challenging times and parishioners are preoccupied with many issues affecting their everyday lives.
“What’s very interesting is that this Holy Week is in the middle of an election season, and so there’s all sorts of other things that are on people’s minds as well. So it’s kind of interesting to see the intersection there between some of those issues there that come up.”
He says the overriding theme during Holy Week is the message given to the disciples at the Last Supper, and Dingwell says he’s seeing that play out as people consider their options in the upcoming election.
“A lot of people are thinking about their neighbours this week, and thinking about when they go and vote…how their vote might help their neighbours, not just be about what’s best for them, but what’s best for their community, so I hear a lot of talk about that this Holy Week.”
