The province’s seniors’ advocate says government is still woefully behind in the availability of long-term care beds.
The province has already made it known that it’s adding dozens of long-term care beds, most of which have already been announced for areas like Corner Brook.
Advocate Susan Walsh says Newfoundland and Labrador has some of the lowest availability of beds per capita.
“There are many, many seniors in hospital beds who are not receiving the level of service that they require because they’re waiting to get into long-term care. So they’re losing ability,” she said.
“They’re losing functionality lying in acute care beds. They’re not getting the programming and the development, out of the bed, moving around to keep their muscle mass, etc.”
