Premier Andrew Furey has heard from Liberal Leader Mark Carney regarding a letter to all of the main federal leaders earlier this month, but there has been silence from the rest.
Furey penned a letter to Carney, Pierre Poilievre, Jagmeet Singh, and Yves-Francois Blanchet asking for their party’s stance on a variety of issues affecting Newfoundland and Labrador.
The premier says he has spoken with Carney about the issues, though he did not respond in writing, and has not heard back from any of the other leaders.
He believes a non response is a testament to the character of the leaders, questions about why they chose not to respond are best addressed to them. That said, Furey was “reassured” by what he heard from Carney.
Furey specifically addresses Carney’s response to concerns around oil and gas emissions caps.
He says he doesn’t believe the cap is the right instrument to be used at this moment given world issues. Further, Furey says the Atlantic Accord supersedes all of that and the energy minister in this province would have to give consent for any caps to be put in place. “Now they (Ottawa) take a different view on that, but Mr. Carney has shown a willingness to have those discussions.”
