NLHS is taking a layered approach to security at the Health Sciences Centre with the new Mental Health and Addictions Centre.
Allison Collins says they’re still debriefing after a shelter-in-place was issued for the Health Sciences and MUN’s Faculty of Medicine nearly a month ago.
RNC later confirmed that the shelter-in-place was based on a weapons-related threat received at the new Mental Health and Addictions Centre.
When asked about concerns about the security of the Health Sciences, Collins pointed to the number of shelter-in-place orders, not just in the hospital but in the province as a whole.
“I don’t think people need to be fearful of weapons at our hospitals. We are being very proactive and exploring multiple options on how we can improve safety at our sites,” she told VOCM News.
“Those threats are, unfortunately, more common in our communities than we’ve seen in the past, so I think we just need to be aware and adapt and listen to the directions that are coming from the sites.”
