White smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel, announcing to the world that Robert Francis Prevost has been named the new Pope.
The 69-year-old was elected as the head of the Catholic Church Thursday evening in Rome.
Prevost secured votes from 89 of the 133 cardinals participating in the conclave.
His first words proclaimed, “Peace be with all of you,” from St. Peters Square as thousands watched before him in Rome.
Prevost is the successor of Pope Francis, who passed away last month.
