Pope Leo is getting some positive reviews from the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. John’s.
Robert Prevost became the first American to be elected Pope yesterday. Though born in Chicago, he also holds Peruvian citizenship and has lived in that country for years.
The St. John’s Sisters of Mercy spent time in Peru with him.
Archbishop Peter Hundt says the Sisters had nothing but good things to say about Pope Leo, describing him as a man of the people.
“We have Sisters of Mercy in our diocese, and they have a mission in Peru. He was the bishop of the diocese where they had their mission,” he said.
“They were very pleased, both when he was named a cardinal and the head of the dicastery for bishops, and they’re ecstatic now that he’s been named the Pope. They found him excellent to work with, a very sensitive man, very pastoral, concerned for the poor. He started a number of neighborhood kitchens.”
