Members of the House of Assembly held a moment of silence in memory of Shanneyganock co-founder Mark Hiscock.
The musician passed away suddenly last week at the age of 53.
Tourism, Culture, Arts, and Recreation Minister Fred Hutton rose in the House of Assembly to pay tribute to Hiscock, calling him a “favourite son of Newfoundland and Labrador.”
Hutton calls Hiscock “one of the finest and most celebrated button accordion players” in the province, if not the entire country.
Hutton says Hiscock’s passing a left a “gaping hole” in the musical community, which may never be filled.
“From the time he was a very young man, Mark was drawn to music. As his passion and artistry grew, so did his contributions to our province. He had a love for traditional Newfoundland and Labrador music and told the stories of this place and our people through his soulful voice and instrumental talents, and he did so with great ease. He has helped to preserve the heritage and culture of this province as we’ve seen generation after generation connect with his music.”
Hiscock was laid to rest this morning in St. John’s.
