By all accounts, the weather gods were shining on most of the province this Victoria Day long weekend, unlike many in the past.
This year’s edition has been uncharacteristically uneventful, with little precipitation, mostly lights winds and temperatures in the low to mid-teens — the only exceptions being parts of the southwest coast and Northern Peninsula.
But, this province has a well-documented history of not being so lucky.
“In 2012, the day after Victoria Day, it was the hottest May day on record, when it got up to 31 degrees,” Environment Canada’s David Neil told VOCM News. “The following year, 2013, we had the snowiest day in May on record, and then, just to finish it off, back in 1991, May 17th, that was the wettest day of rain in May on record.
“So, just here in Gander you’ve seen the three daily records for the month of May in or around that weekend, so you really could get anything.”
