There’s a public meting in St. Mary’s tonight to talk about problems with garbage collection.
It has become the largest single expenditure for the town council in a town of just over 300, something which the mayor says should not be.
They used to pay $180 per household, per year, but the contractor who provided the service retired. That meant the government agency Eastern Waste Management took over, and the cost shot up to $220 per household.
Mayor Steve Ryan says they used to have two bulk garbage pickups per year included in the $180. But not now.
He says they have been reduced to one bulk pickup but the one that was scheduled for right about now was postponed by Eastern Waste at the last minute to October. Mayor Ryan says there are large items at the curb everywhere – not a good thing at the height of tourism season.
Officials from Eastern Waste will be in attendance tonight.
