The Canadian Armed Forces have been contacted to assist with next steps after a live shell was retrieved from the water near Bell Island by a local lobster fisherman.
The shell was retrieved by the RNC Explosives Unit on the weekend and taken to the airstrip on Bell Island where it is being held for members of the military.
The RNC sent two members to Bell Island and determined that the object was an intact, but severely corroded military shell.
The RCMP say there is no risk to the public, however, out of an abundance of caution, a police perimeter remains in place and residents are asked to stay away from the area.
RCMP say an update will be provided when the area has been cleared.
