An update is coming today on government’s plan to build a new corrections facility.
Talks about replacing HMP, which is over 160-years-old and littered with problems, have been happening for decades.
Government went back to the drawing board with the process in late 2023 due to significant cost issues, but officials were adamant that shovels would be in the ground in 2025.
New Avalon Corrections Partners made the sole submission to the revamped request for qualifications in early 2024.
Hafeez Habib, a representative from that group, will be joined by infrastructure minister Elvis Loveless, justice minister John Haggie, and area MHA Bernard Davis for a news conference at the site of the new facility today.
It is taking place at 12 p.m. near the intersection of Harding Road and East White Hills Road. VOCM News will be there.
