RCMP say road collisions on highways in their jurisdiction have totaled four so far this year, and they fear the number could climb higher.
The Mounties say each summer Newfoundland and Labrador sees heavier traffic volume, and as a result, a spike in fatal collisions.
Last year RCMP in Newfoundland and Labrador responded to 30 serious collisions resulting in a total of 24 deaths, most of those between the months of June and September.
RCMP are urging drivers to drive with caution and within the posted speed limit with their seatbelts properly fastened.
Last Thursday, RCMP Traffic Services East stopped nine drivers for speeding, six of whom were travelling at speeds of more than 31 km/h over the posted limit—including one driver who was speeding at 152 km/h in a 100 km/h zone.
