The Mayor of Twillingate says the town has not received any formal complaints, but they are aware that some tourists are being taken out to see the icebergs by people who are not registered tour boat operators.
This summer has seen a bumper crop of icebergs travel through iceberg alley, and the tourists are flocking to Twillingate to have a look.
The matter was raised with VOCM News this week, and Mayor Justin Blackler says the town would prefer if tourists enjoyed what the town and surrounding waters have to offer through one of their many licensed and registered tour operators.
“I’m, not surprised,” says Blackler, “that we have local individuals who are taking a bit of cash to take people out. Obviously, as a town, that’s not what we want to see. I mean, we’ve got individuals who have invested hundreds of thousands of dollars to be trained, licensed operators, paying business tax to the community. We would love for our tourists to be using those services and for people to respect that people have invested into the community.”
