Forestry minister Lisa Dempster says a pot of federal and provincial funding will soon be made available to communities to help with the prevention of forest fires.
After several very tense days, residents of Badger were allowed to return to their homes yesterday after they had to be evacuated due to a nearby wild fire.
Warm and dry conditions have led to a very active start to the forest fire season in the province. Fires near Churchill Falls and Badger threatened communities, while a blaze in Adam’s Cove destroyed several homes.
Dempster says the remaining details of the program are being finalized.
She states money through the initiative can be used by communities for prevention.
She says that could mean creating a fire break around the community, or using the money for education initiatives.
