Ottawa is going to launch a public review of the recreational cod fishery in the fall.
Many were surprised when the dates and terms were released as they were identical to last year and many years previous. This, despite the federal government’s decision to double the quota for the commercial cod fishery.
Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson, the MP for St. John’s East, says she decided to roll over the terms and times for this summer and fall, but she wants to hear from the public on what they would like to see in subsequent years.
She says it’s about balancing the cultural and real need for people to have cod as a food source, but we also have to manage the stock,” says Minister Thompson.
The recreational pursuit could have gotten off to a disastrous start yesterday but two people whose boat overturned on Conception Bay off Crawley’s Point were rescued by the authorities.
