Newfoundland and Labrador is among the worst in the country when it comes to barriers impeding interprovincial trade according to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business – tying with Quebec, and trailed only by the three territories.
The CFIB’s report on internal trade barriers assigned Newfoundland and Labrador an overall grade of C minus.
Earlier this year, Minister of Jobs Gerry Byrne indicated that Newfoundland and Labrador cannot, and will not participate in a nationwide free trade agreement, due to what he described as the “barbed wire, chain-link gate,” that is Marine Atlantic.
The report finds that Ontario and Nova Scotia serve as models to free trade country-wide.
