A group of students at Gonzaga High School in St. John’s has developed three technological devices to help senior citizens improve their memory skills.
The ten students were one of only three groups in Canada to receive the 2025 Vimy Inspires Tomorrow Grant.
Alpita Patro, a member of the Creators of Tomorrow, a STEM club at Gonzaga, says their winning project focuses on designing, coding, and 3-D-printing memory devices for seniors – combining science, compassion, and innovation.,
Patro says they took into account the challenges some seniors have with technology, so she went to Bishops Gardens home where she spoke with staff. She says that age group responds well to colours and lights. Their project, she says, will make it easier for seniors to do things they enjoy such as playing cards.
She says using colours and lights is how they came up with their different games to help stimulate their minds.
