Finance minister and deputy premier Siobhan Coady will not be running in the next election.
Coady made the announcement in a video posted to social media Monday afternoon.
She was first elected as the MHA for St. John’s West in the 2015 provincial election as a member of the Dwight Ball government.
In addition to her current portfolios, Coady has also spent time as minister responsible for the status of women, minister of natural resources, and minister responsible for the office of public engagement.
Before provincial politics, she was a federal politician, serving as the Liberal MP for St. John’s South-Mount Pearl from 2008 to 2011.
Coady says serving as an elected official has been “the honour of (her) lifetime.”
She says what she will carry with her most, are the moments connecting with people.
She references speaking with people on their doorsteps about “the shared hopes for our future, ” and building a stronger province. Coady says she leaves politics with optimism in her heart because of the foundation that has been laid.
