Bell Island is reeling this summer with ferry woes and other issues impacting the tourism, business and other sectors.
Yesterday, the island was left cut off from the mainland with both the Flanders and Beaumont Hamel out for repairs. One boat is sailing today.
Mayor Philip Tobin has asked the province to provide it with a third boat, the Astron, which is currently plying the waters off Fogo and Change Islands. Given that the larger Veteran is also on that run, Mayor Tobin is asking for help on the tickle.
He says they have been asking the government for the last month for the Astron, which is a newer vessel than either the Flanders or Beaumont Hamel.
Compounding the matter is that there is no gas station on the island, meaning people have to travel on the ferry just to refuel.
