An attempt to set trial dates in a St. John’s manslaughter case were thwarted again in provincial court this week.
This time because the accused has been waiting for an appointment at the new Mental Health and Addictions Centre.
Twenty-nine-year-old Tanner Oliver was charged two years ago in the death of a 55-year-old woman on Hunt’s Lane.
Police were called to a home on the street where they found with victim in serious condition, and she was rushed to hospital.
Six weeks later she succumbed to her injuries, and a year after that, in March of 2023, Oliver was charged with manslaughter.
The case has slowly been working its way through the courts but various delays have sidetracked the proceedings.
That happened again last month when a judge granted a request for a 30-day psychiatric exam.
The results were expected this week, accompanied by new trial dates.
But court was told the assessment was only confirmed this week, and Oliver can’t get in until August 1 at the new mental health centre.
With that, it was agreed to again put off setting dates pending results of the assessment.
The case will next be called on August 20 for an update on those tests.
