Two more longtime Liberal cabinet ministers will not be running in the upcoming provincial election.
Steve Crocker, who is the current minister of industry, energy, and technology, announced via social media this morning that he will not be seeking re-election.
A couple of hours later, justice and public safety minister John Haggie announced the same.
Crocker was first elected in the district of Carbonear – Trinity – Bay de Verde in 2014 in a by-election, and Haggie was first elected in Gander during the 2015 general election.
Both of the politicians have served in numerous cabinet positions under Dwight Ball, Andrew Furey, and now premier John Hogan.
Haggie most notably served as the minister of health during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Crocker says it has been an “absolute honour” to serve as an elected official for the last 11 years, and gives thanks to his family, constituents, and colleagues.
Haggie says he is proud of what has been accomplished over the last ten years, noting that it has been a “demanding and challenging time.” He thanks his wife, constituents, and his staff for their support.
The politicians are the latest in a number of long-time and high-profile cabinet ministers to announce their time in provincial politics is coming to an end, including deputy premier Siobhan Coady who made a similar announcement last week.
