Sentencing has been set for a St. John’s man accused of nearly stabbing a woman to death a year and a half ago.
Thirty-seven-year-old William John Oliver was first charged with aggravated assault in the immediate aftermath of the attack on Dec. 13, 2023.
RNC were called to a house on Ricketts Road, near St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital, where they found a woman in serious condition with stab wounds.
She survived but continues to recover from her injuries.
Oliver was arrested at the same house and was originally charged with aggravated assault, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, theft under $5,000, damaging property and breaching court conditions.
But six months later the aggravated assault charge was upgraded to attempted murder, with police only saying their investigation had yielded more evidence to support the more serious allegation.
Court was told this morning that the Crown and defence are working on an agreed statement of facts to accompany guilty pleas to all of the charges.
They’ll be working on finalizing those details between now and the sentencing hearing set for October 28th.
