The Hall of Fame for St. John’s most iconic sporting event welcomed five more to the fold yesterday.
The Royal St. John’s Regatta Committee gave the new inductees the royal treatment during a ceremony at City Hall.
The fabulous five include: Rowers Jim Carroll and Craig Whittle; builders CJON / NTV and the late Dr. Peter Hollett, and the 2007 Crosbie Industrial Services crew consisting of Brent Hickey, Adam Kavanagh, Ron Whitten, Ed Williams, James Cadigan, Darryl Ryan, coach Bert Hickey and cox Mark Hayward, which set the long course record of 8:51:32, which still stands today.
The importance of family support and patience was front and centre in the recipients’ remarks, with each conceding they couldn’t have done it without their kids or significant others.
And then there was Dr. Catherine Bradbury, whose husband and inductee Dr. Hollett passed away just nine months ago.
Hollett held a boatful of positions with the Regatta over six decades, from rower to committee member to judge at the bottom of the pond.
An emotional Bradbury said she expects he’ll be right back there for this year’s running.
“I know that when the Regatta happens next week, he will be at the bottom of the pond, if only in spirit.”
The 207th running of the Royal St. John’s Regatta is being held on the last Wednesday in July this year, instead of the first Wednesday in August, due to the Canada Summer Games.
