The minister responsible for several files including affordability says they’re taking measures to help people who face extra challenges cope with the rising cost of living.
The first monthly payment of the Newfoundland and Labrador Disability Benefit went out a week ago—up to $400.
Persons with disabilities will receive up to $400 on the 25th of each month, and up to 8,000 people are now eligible to receive the payment.
Minister Jamie Korab also notes that the new program includes a $1,200 annual contribution to a Registered Disability Savings Plan, but details of that component are still being finalized.

He says one email came from a family who were finding things tough. Minister Korab says the benefit is having a positive impact.
There is also money available for persons who need assistance to make a vehicle more accessible.
People can get up to $50,000 to improve features of their vehicle—whether it’s new or used.
The $400 disability benefit is being administered by the Canada Revenue Agency, so anybody who has questions will have to contact them at 1-800-387-1193.
