The City of St. John’s is extending the slow-down times around schools by 30 minutes.
Signs in school zones throughout the city stipulate a speed limit of 30 km/h from 7:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.
That’s been the case since 2015 when they were first implemented from recommendations by the city’s police and traffic committee.
But some time between then and now it was discovered that those times don’t line up with the Highway Traffic Act, which kicks in a half hour earlier, at 7 a.m.
As a result, school zone signs will change from 7:30 to 7 a.m. on regular school days as of Sept. 3rd.
The move was approved during yesterday’s regular public council meeting.
The city says it’s making the adjustment in co-ordination with the rollout of the province’s new speed camera program.
