Athletes kicked off over two weeks of sports with its opening ceremonies in of the Canada Games St. John’s.
Organizers introduced provincial flag bearers from each province, including Nathan Luscombe of Grand Falls-Windsor, a swimmer who was born with a disability.
While Premier John Hogan addressed the wildfire situation in his speech, he noted that a lot has changed in the city since St. John’s last hosted the event in 1977.
He’s optimistic that the games will bring positive news to the province.
“Our province has been through a lot over the years and over the decades, and we will get through this,” he told a crowded room.
“And to have a little bit of fun and brightness and spirit, Newfoundland and Labrador and Canadian spirit, over the next couple of weeks, I think is a very good thing, and I’m looking forward to it.”
