While word has been spreading on social media that the fire at Paddy’s Pond is out, officials say that is not the case.
There is some positive news however. The Trans Canada Highway has reopened at Paddy’s Pond and winds have turned in the area, pushing the fire into the pond, allowing crews to concentrate on hot spots.
RNC warn highway could close again on short notice
The RNC say while the Trans Canada is open once again, that situation could change rapidly.
The Constabulary is working with the department of forestry and with the Provincial Emergency Operations Centre, and should conditions change, the highway may be closed again at short notice.
Evacuation orders remain in effect. Paddy’s Pond Road and Northern Pond Road remain closed.
The RNC reminds drivers to excercise patience and follow the instructions of emergency workers. Drivers are being asked not to stop their vehicles or to get out of your vehicle on the road.
Weather conditions working in favour of firefighting efforts
The premier says cooler temperatures and higher humidity are working in favour of the firefighting effort, even if there isn’t much rain.
“Some fire breaks are complete, and some are still under construction” says Hogan “and at this time there is no structure loss reported.” There are 3-4 water bombers, a bird dog, two helicopters bucketing water, two Coast Guard helicopters, and local fire departments continuing to work on the fire. Twenty-five ground crew are working in the area and the St. John’s regional Fire Department is working to keep the fire away from the Trans Canada.
“Residents are reminded that this fire is very active, and to monitor official government sources for updates.”
