The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is warning of the dangers of hosting and attending field parties, especially given the very serious situation facing the province right now due to wildfires.
The Constabulary says they are aware of one party planned for this weekend, which they call “particularly concerning” given the provincial fire ban.
Though the RNC do not state where the field party is supposed to be, they do say the area will be closely monitored and action will be taken if an offence has occurred. They remind that those found in violation of the fire ban could face between $50,000 and $150,000 in fines, and imprisonment.
Moreover, police highlight numerous other concerns, including violence, impaired driving, underage drinking, unsupervised fires, and noise complaints.
For parents, they are asked to speak with their teens about the risks of field parties. They should also know where their children will be, have frequent check-ins, let their teen know they can call them for help, and establish a code word to signal for help.
Teenagers are being reminded to never drive impaired, never accept a ride from someone who has been drinking, stay with a buddy, have a cell phone with them at all times, make sure an adult knows where they are and how to contact them, and to call 911 if they or someone they know is in danger.
