The Latest Information as of 11:45 a.m.
Cool temperatures and light winds helped firefighters across the province, as crews contend with three major wildfires.
There is no word on whether there will be another wildfire news conference today. VOCM News will carry any updates live.
Kingston Fire
The Kingston fire saw little growth through Saturday, remaining at over 9,500 hectares, and overnight, frost helped with suppression efforts.
Northerly winds worked in favour of ground crews, allowing the Canadian Armed Forces and volunteer fire departments to create a fuel break about four kilometres in length.
Martin Lake Fire
In central, ground crews worked on saving cabins near Martin Lake and Rushy Pond on Saturday.
Aerial crews were able to attack the fire by Saturday afternoon, with a low ceiling creating poor visibility for pilots.
The fire was re-mapped, and tallied at 1,770 hectares.
The Bay d’Espoir Highway (Route 360) will open again for limited access from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m..
The government is asking the public to avoid travel on the road, and notes that the highway could close at a moment’s notice.
Paddy’s Pond Fire
Meanwhile, a number of homeowners were told in St. John’s that they no longer need to remain ready to evacuate, as alerts were dropped for thousands of homeowners.
The fire at Paddy’s Pond remains active, according to government.
