Marine Atlantic has begun the process of replacing the 35-year-old vessel the Leif Ericson.
The company has issued a request for proposals for existing companies that have an existing vessel and are willing to enter into a 5-year charter agreement.
Among the specifications they are looking for, the new ferry must be able to carry up to 1,000 passengers and have amenities such as cabins and restaurant facilities.
Manager of corporate communications, Darrell Mercer, says there are numerous issues with the current vessel, including availability of parts for repairs and issues with vessel parameters in the winter – meaning it can’t sail in certain wind conditions.
He says they sent that information to the federal government, who agreed that the ship isn’t reliable any more, leading to the RFP.
The RFP closes on September 12th.
