A pop-up fundraising event is set for tomorrow in St. John’s to help firefighters and the people affected by the massive wildfire in Conception Bay North.
Marian Frances White has deep roots in Perry’s Cove and she and her husband Benny Malone built a cottage in the community a decade or so ago.
Residents of Perry’s Cove have been evacuated for more than three weeks, and while it’s still there, the fire came very close to burning through the community if not for the tireless work of firefighters and other volunteers.
“The firefighters kept us abreast of what was happening in the (neighbouring) community called Spout Cove, which is largely an abandoned community. But the fire did come over the hill right by an old root cellar that’s been there for 150 years. So it was very worrisome. But the firefighters put a sprinkler system around our little cottage and as well as the shed there and that kept the fire at bay.”
White says they wanted to let all the firefighters know how appreciative they were for all their work through the fire. A pop-up fundraiser is planned at the Wonderbolt space on the Harbourfront in St. John’s.
There’ll be an open, bar, food, music and a basic to collect donations, well wishes and other supports including food and cards of appreciation.
It takes place tomorrow from 7:00 p.m. until 10:00 or 11:00 p.m.
