Despite the difficulty being faced by people who don’t know when – or if – they’ll be able to return to their homes, some special relationships are being fostered at Carbonear Academy, which has served as a hub for evacuees of the fire in Conception Bay North.

From food, to lodging and even entertainment, volunteers from the Canadian Red Cross, the Salvation Army and many other service groups are doing what they can to lift spirits at an otherwise difficult time.
Public Safety Minister John Haggie describes the reception centre as a “hive of activity.”

“The Salvation Army and their helpers have delivered, I think the last count was over 12,000 meals. I was down at the reception centre the other day, greeted by goats at the door, therapy goats.”
He says in the kitchen the Knights of Columbus, the Shriners and the Masons were all on site helping out. “I was amazed at the variety of people doing what they can for others” says Haggie.
