One of the city officials behind the new Mews Centre in St. John’s says the facility was built with the effects of climate change in mind.
The facility will open to the public on September 15.
One of the more unique features of the new building is that the pool is located on the second floor, as opposed to the ground level.
Tonya Knopp, the manager of facility engineering with the city of St. John’s, says they made that decision based on concerns around climate change and sustainability.
She says there were other aspects they had to consider from a climate change perspective as well, such as exterior finishes on the building, and its elevation. She says that helps them combat damages that may come from heavy rain, flooding and winds.
