The union which represents workers in the emergency medical system, which includes hard-to-get paramedics, says the contract with Medavie to overhaul the road and air ambulance service in the province creates many questions.
Government has gone to the private sector to operate and manage that component of the health care sector with a 10-year contract with Medavie for $560-million.
It will be up to the company to decide where road ambulances will be based.
NAPE President Jerry Earle says that is a complex piece of the puzzle as it’s not as simple as linking up ambulances with hospitals and medical clinics.
Earle is also concerned that politicians appear to be making some of the decisions even before Medavie gets a firm grip on the system.
“It’s concerning that politicians are already making announcements with no consultation with frontline workers or the unions. We have had no discussions with anyone abut the contract,” says Earle.
