Former NDP leader Allison Coffin is running in the upcoming provincial election – this time as an Independent in two separate districts.
Elections NL confirms there is nothing to stop a candidate from running in more than one district.
Coffin, who was the MHA for St. John’s East – Quidi Vidi, stepped down as party leader after the 2021 provincial election.
For the last four years coffin was embroiled in a legal dispute about the results.
That court matter was resolved this past June.
Now, Coffin says she has accepted nominations to run in two districts: Harbour Grace – Port de Grave and Carbonear – Trinity – Bay de Verde.
Coffin says she had been asked by people to run in those districts, and says an underlying reason for her decision is electoral reform.
She calls it a “huge issue” and she believes as an independent she can take on that issue “head on” a different way than any of the main parties could.
Current NDP leader Jim Dinn says he did approach Coffin about running for them, but he understands her reasons and says “more power to her.”
