The Mayor of Torbay is asking residents to conserve water because of critically-low levels at North Pond, which serves a big part of the town.
Craig Scott says levels at North Pond are 8 feet below normal and residents need to do more to conserve water, or the pond could go dry.
Torbay is one of a number of municipalities that have seen all-time lows at their reservoirs due to a summer drought and reduced precipitation going back as far as the winter.
He says conservation measures started back in June, yet water levels on the pond are continuing to drop.
He says they’re trying to avoid calling a State of Emergency.
“I think that we need to do more,” Scott told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly, he says people on the water supply need to know that they’re the only ones who can control how much water gets used. He says if more pressure or capacity is lost, “that’s going to be a really critical situation for people that are on that supply.”
