Memorial University students marched from the Clock Tower to Confederation Building over the lunch hour Wednesday, urging authorities to come up with ways to ease the financial pressures they’re facing.
The students union argues that the provincial government has cut funding to MUN by 46 per cent since 2013, and MUNSU wants that funding restored.
They also want to see an end to unpaid work terms.
Sam Battye says he has to work nearly 500 unpaid hours in the education program, leaving him no time for a second job.
“When you think about it, not only are you not paid for an unpaid work term, for instance, you are working 40-50 hours a week. You do not have time to have a second job, a part-time job. Many people rely on a part-time job to be able to pay for life here. Even student loans that you can get from the government will not fully cover your rent, your food, everything you need to live, and your massively increased tuition.”
