A St. John’s man convicted of impaired driving causing death has been given more time to get a lawyer before he’s sentenced.
Thirty-eight-year-old Rod Constantine pleaded guilty in July, a year and a half after the crash that killed 32-year-old Mark Squires, and left Constantine and a passenger with serious, life-altering injuries.
The three were in a car driven by Constantine that slammed into an NL Housing unit on Empire Avenue in December of 2023.
But the accused has since parted ways with his lawyer, and has applied to Legal Aid for someone else to represent him for the sentencing phase.
This morning court was told that Legal Aid has the application and is gathering financial information to determine if Constantine qualifies.
Meanwhile, grieving relatives, who have been showing up for each court date, continue to seek and wait for closure.
A decision by Legal Aid is expected when the case is called again on November 12th.
