Now that the new PC government has been sworn in, St. John’s Pride will be looking for commitments that will benefit the LGBTQ+ community across the province.
While co-chair Eddy St. Coeur takes issue with the appointment of Steve Outhouse to Premier Tony Wakeham’s transition team, which the premier has defended, he says there are positives in the new cabinet.
In particular, St. Coeur says having Helen Conway-Ottenheimer, who has a big background in advocating for human rights, as Women and Gender Equality Minister is a good thing. As well he highlights Lela Evans being given a cabinet post as important as he believes she is one of the first out community members to be given that kind of a role.
St. Coeur says he will be looking for commitments to continue to support the community in the province.
He exchanged emails with Wakeham over the summer when the PCs participated in the pride parade, and at that time the leader said they were committed to supporting the community. St. Coeur uses Quadrangle as an example of an organization that doesn’t get provincial funding that could use support.
