It has been a week for the Gulf ferry system between Port aux Basques and North Sydney, with nothing moving again today.
Two storms, including Melissa, began wreaking havoc on the transportation network early in the week and while last night provided a small window to make one crossing, the weather gods have again clenched their fists.
Darrell Mercer, a spokesperson for Marine Atlantic, says nothing is moving today and it’s doubtful that any boat will sail before the second half of the day tomorrow.
He says the backlog is significant.
He says there are a couple of hundred commercial units on the Nova Scotia side waiting to get across. Some of the passenger traffic moved last night but there was not enough capacity to get everyone across.
“We’re trying to get that weather window to clear up some of the backlog but it looks like it’s going to be tomorrow evening at the earliest,” says Mercer.
