Snowfall and wind warnings are in effect as the first real winter blizzard of the season is forecast for most of the island – the brunt of which is expected tomorrow.
The snow will start overnight with snowfall amounts of 10 to 20 cm forecast through Wednesday afternoon and into Wednesday night before tapering off around midnight.
Highest snowfall amounts are expected through the Clarenville, Terra Nova and Bonavista Peninsula area.
Environment Canada meteorologist David Neil says the highest snowfall amounts are expected through the interior and over higher elevations with strong winds gusting as high as 100 km/h reducing visibility in blowing snow.
On the Avalon and Burin peninsulas, approximately 10 to 15 cm of snow is expected before turning to heavy rain.
Another system bringing rain or snow and blowing snow is expected on Friday.
He says more snowfall is expected, affecting most of the island and parts of Labrador, while the Avalon and Burin peninsulas could see more snow turning to rain.
