The homicide rate in Newfoundland and Labrador dropped in 2024 compared to the previous year.
That’s according to the latest numbers released by Statistics Canada.
The homicide rate in this province was at 1.48 per 100,000 in 2024 – equating to four deaths compared to eight deaths in 2023.
That’s among the lowest in the country per capita.
The highest homicide rates were in Manitoba, (6.29 in 2024) followed by Saskatchewan (5.24 in 2024).
Meanwhile, overall crime rates in the capital city region have risen steadily over the last five years.

According to the provincial government’s crime dashboard, violent crime accounted for 26.36 per cent of all actual incidents processed by the RNC in 2024, while property crime accounted for just over half of actual incidents (51.83 per cent) once unfounded calls were eliminated.
