With time ticking away for people to finish their Christmas shopping, the Better Business Bureau wants to make sure people don’t fall victim to a scam as they rush to make their purchases.
The BBB says scammers are always looking to take advantage of the holiday rush, noting that last-minute shopping can make people more vulnerable to scams, privacy risks, and overspending.
To avoid becoming a victim this holiday season, the organization has several tips – most of which are related to online spending.
They say to always make sure that a website is secure before entering any payment information. Websites that have HTTPS at the beginning of their URL are secure – which is what the ‘S’ stands for. Sites that only have HTTP are not secure.
They also warn against looking at countdown timers and “limited stock” alerts, as those can be used to pressure potential customers into making rash decisions.
People are urged to be “extremely cautious” when using non-traditional payment methods, and that having professional-looking photos does not make a website legitimate.
As well, the BBB encourages people to check return and exchange policies before making any purchase, especially from pop-up shops and seasonal retailers.
