The capital city will provide an update on snow clearing activities this afternoon at city hall.
The entire Avalon is in the process of digging out from a substantial dumping of snow
Some 60 cm of the white stuff fell on the Avalon and Clarenville area with lesser amounts in points beyond.
The Deputy City Manager for Public Works, Lynnann Winsor, will speak with media at 3 p.m. regarding the cleanup.
Councillor Greg Noseworthy, the lead for public works, says the cleanup will take some time. Some areas, particularly the downtown, present their own challenges with very few places to put the snow.
“Airport Heights, Cowan Heights, places like Kilbride, because of their elevation may have higher amounts of snow,” says Co. Noseworthy. “So it may take longer in those areas, but our crews have been working ’round the clock.”
Things will start moving at St. John’s International today. Lisa Bragg, YYT director of marketing, says they had about 35 flights impacted by the weather.
Bragg suspects that the airlines will begin to add extra sections or change the size of the aircraft to accommodate passengers, but it’s up to the discretion of the various carriers ads to when they are good to go, she says.
There is more snow coming on the weekend for the Avalon, but Environment Canada meteorologist Justin Boudreau says the jury is still out as to whether it will be a substantial amount.
