A new report shows that nearly half of all murders in Newfoundland and Labrador over the last decade were linked to domestic or family violence.
The study looked at all 53 homicides in the province from 2012-2022. It found that 23 of those killings were related to violence at home. Fourteen of those victims were killed by a current or former partner.
The report says government has taken some positive steps, like creating Clare’s Law and special courts for domestic violence cases. It also notes an expenditure of $17-milion for safe housing for victims.
The study was led by Dr. Myrna Dawson, a leading expert on the killing of women, also known as femicide.
