A messy weather system is making its way across the island today, bringing rain to the east, snow to the west, and strong winds for all.
Environment Canada meteorologist Tiffany Cheeks says everywhere east of, and including Gander will transition to rain today.
That has already happened on the Avalon, with Cheeks noting that area will see the heaviest rainfall – with totals between 10 and 20 mm.
Everywhere west of Gander will stay as snow today, with 20 and 40 cm possible.
A number of schools are closed as a result of the weather, along with the provincial courts in Grand Falls-Windsor. VOCM’s Storm Watch can be viewed here.
The story heading into tonight, Cheeks explains, will be the winds.
She says parts of the northeast coast could see gusts between 130 km/h and 140 km/h, and that will be coupled with some more snow. Central will see guts of around 90 km/h. She says the worst of the weather will happen overnight.
Cheeks says things will calm down tomorrow, though some gusty winds may stick around in the morning.
