The Opposition is calling on the provincial government to take action in addressing rising electricity bills.
Callers to VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly yesterday expressed shock over significant increases in their power bills compared to the month before.
Opposition Leader John Hogan is calling on government to open the House of Assembly and remove the provincial tax from electricity bills.
He says even a 10 per cent reduction would help ease the pressure on families, but “we still need to do more.”
NDP critic Sheilagh O’Leary says it’s clear that government has no plan to deal with such issues. She’s not letting the company off the hook, either.
“Dave Hutchens of Fortis Canada makes $15.7-million – that’s a 9.1 per cent increase from the year before,” says O’Leary. “So people at the top are making lots and lots of money but people on the ground are hurting.”
