A new rotating exhibition featuring the work of local black artists opens today at the LSPU Hall in St. John’s.
The executive director of the Art of Being Black, artist Brian Amadi, says they’re launching a new Visibility Wall, featuring local black artists from a variety of cultures and backgrounds.
He says the idea grew out of a show held at the LSPU Hall a year or so ago.
“In 2024-25 we had a project called ‘Rooted’…about showing that black people belonged in Newfoundland, because we had been getting this opinion that ‘there’s no black people here’ and that’s absolutely false. So we created a project that showcases that not only do we belong here, but we are the fabric of Newfoundland. I guess the LSPU Hall heard that and they invited us to have a conversation that helps progress that conversation and progress that thought.”
The Visibility Wall officially opens this afternoon at 5:00.
